The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) initiated an extensive pilot program to demonstrate the benefits of using green stormwater management infrastructure to reduce pollutants and improve the water quality of Rock Creek, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay. The program included the installation of innovative and cost-effective vegetative and permeable pavement in 16 locations to better control water quality and quantity.
As DDOT’s representative, Volkert provided construction management and inspection, landscape architecture, public relations, and training services. This ensured that each Best Management Practice (BMP) was constructed to the highest quality and demonstrated the effectiveness and value of using these green stormwater management (also called low impact development) techniques throughout the City.
In coordination with the DDOT Stormwater Management Branch and the Green Infrastructure Team, Volkert developed and conducted training for inspection, construction, and DDOT personnel to equip those involved in the planning and implementation of green stormwater infrastructure with the critical knowledge needed for the proper installation of high-performing BMPs.
