A stretch of Hillsborough River shoreline at Tampa’s Lowry Park, which is both a municipal park and a zoo, was severely eroded and portions of the riverbank were covered with broken concrete riprap. The City of Tampa selected Volkert to design a stabilized riverbank with pedestrian amenities suitable for this highly visible and well-used facility.
Volkert designed a stabilized riverbank with a pedestrian walkway. Volkert’s design entailed cleanup, regrading, decked walkways on timber piers, lookout points, protected tree wells, and landscaping with plant species suitable for the tidal riverbank ecology. A prefabricated open-cell concrete block mat system was chosen for one section of the shoreline stabilization because of its effectiveness, ease of maintenance, and natural look. The total design covered 1,800 feet of shoreline stabilization. The City of Tampa considered this riverbank rehabilitation to be a demonstration project for shoreline development.
This project was awarded the Award of Merit from the Planning Commission of Hillsborough County for outstanding design and community contribution.
