Volkert's structural departments offer more than just bridge design and inspection.  Our experienced structural engineers offer the full range of structural design services to our clients, including industrial, utility, marine, and architectural.

Volkert's engineers have diverse experience in docks and piers for ports, bulk material import/export facilities, large warehouse design, multi-level parking garages, concrete and steel tank designs and buildings for utility plants, all types of structural foundations for industrial applications, structural design support for architectural buildings, and coastal designs of piers, wharves, beachfront pavilions and boardwalks.

One particularly unique project was Volkert's contract with the USS Alabama Battleship Commission.  The project involves the rehabilitation of the historic battleship USS Alabama and the historic submarine USS Drum at Battleship Park in Mobile, Alabama.  After 40 plus years of sitting in Mobile Bay, both vessels suffered severe corrosion and damage from many hurricanes over the years.  Volkert's structural professional designed a steel and concrete bulkhead around the battleship so that the water could be pumped away from the ship, and new steel plating could be added to the corroded areas.  The submarine was floated into a temporary steel sheetpile cofferdam and raised some 19 feet by hyperflooding the enclosed coffer.  The submarine now rests on concrete pedestals, high and dry.
